if you're looking for profound phish lyrics, you won't find them anywhere.

the early phish songs were either part of trey's Gamehendge cycle (his senior musical thesis about the fantasy world of Gamehendge), were simply vehicles for jamming, or inside jokes of the band (hence the silly lyrics). the early phish philosophy was basically "lyrics aren't important."

later they made attempts at writing something a little more profound, and while the newer phish albums have stuff more closely resembling songs (some pretty catchy i might add) their songwriting skills are still fairly amateurish.

i'm not sure what you heard in that music shop Althea, but one album i could suggest is probably their most eclectic work, "A Picture Of Nectar." be warned there are plenty of silly lyrics, however.

Well, it was actually a camping store, and the staff just play stuff from their ipods. So far all I know it could have been something not on an album. Or the person who said it was Phish could be wrong. But I'm interested in learning more about stuff that has a Dead-like sound (or approach) ... I'm pretty embarrasingly out of it, rock music-wise. (If rock is the right word. It doesn't quite sound right.) Tend to listen to bluegrass, classical, older jazz and older rock, but would be interested to know more about what the Dead inspired. That is, if it's any good :-)

you should definitely check out Widespread Panic then. they have a lot of dead influence and they are great musicians. and they can write a song or two, lol.
